Down by the Riverside: LRRP Rangers in Vietnam
During the Vietnam War, the U.S. Army's Long Range Reconnaissance Patrols (LRRPs) played a critical role in gathering intelligence, conducting raids, and carrying out other covert operations deep behind enemy lines. These elite soldiers were known for their courage, self-sufficiency, and ability to operate in the most hostile environments.
One of the most famous LRRP units was the "Down by the Riverside" company, based in the Mekong Delta. This unit was responsible for some of the war's most daring and successful missions, including the raid on the North Vietnamese headquarters at Ap Bac in 1963.
In this article, we'll take a closer look at the Down by the Riverside LRRP Rangers, their training, their missions, and their legacy.

- Close quarters combat
Ranger training was also designed to instill a sense of self-reliance and teamwork. Rangers were taught to operate independently and to rely on each other for support.
LRRP Rangers were tasked with a variety of missions, including:
- Reconnaissance and surveillance
- Raids and ambushes
- Prisoner capture
- Search and rescue
- Psychological operations
Rangers operated deep behind enemy lines, often for weeks at a time. They were often inserted by helicopter or parachute, and they had to be prepared to live off the land and to fight their way out if they were discovered.
One of the most famous LRRP missions was the raid on the North Vietnamese headquarters at Ap Bac in 1963. This raid was a major victory for the U.S. Army, and it helped to boost morale during a difficult period of the war.
The Down by the Riverside LRRP Rangers left a lasting legacy of courage, self-sacrifice, and professionalism. Their missions were often dangerous and difficult, but they always carried them out with distinction.
The Rangers' legacy is still alive today. The U.S. Army's 75th Ranger Regiment is the direct descendant of the LRRP Rangers, and it continues to train and deploy elite soldiers to carry out special operations around the world.
