The story begins in the summer of 1958, when five friends are playing on a hill overlooking the town. They are all around 10 years old, and they have been friends since they were little kids. The friends are:
* David, the leader of the group, who is always coming up with new ideas for adventures. * Sarah, the shy and thoughtful one, who is always there for her friends. * Michael, the class clown, who is always making people laugh. * Jessica, the tomboy, who is not afraid of anything. * Peter, the youngest of the group, who is always looking up to his older friends.
The friends are having a great time playing on the hill, when they suddenly hear a scream. They run to the edge of the hill and see a car overturned at the bottom. They rush down to help, and they find that the driver is a young woman who has been badly injured.
The friends do everything they can to help the woman, but she dies in their arms. They are all devastated by her death, and they don't know what to do.
After the accident, the friends are all changed. They are more aware of the fragility of life, and they are more afraid of taking risks. They also become more withdrawn from each other, and they start to drift apart.
As the years go by, the friends all go their separate ways. David becomes a doctor, Sarah becomes a teacher, Michael becomes a comedian, Jessica becomes a police officer, and Peter becomes a businessman. They all have successful careers, but they are all still haunted by the memory of the accident.
One day, David receives a letter from Sarah. She tells him that she is dying of cancer, and she wants to see him one last time. David goes to visit Sarah, and they talk about their lives and the accident. Sarah tells David that she has never forgotten about him, and she has always loved him.
David is heartbroken when Sarah dies, but he is also grateful for the time they had together. He realizes that even though they have all gone their separate ways, they will always be connected by the memory of their friendship.
The Children On The Hill is a story about the power of friendship, the fragility of life, and the importance of cherishing the moments we have with the people we love. It is a story that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.
