If you are new to cross-stitching, then this tutorial is for you. We will teach you everything you need to know to get started, including how to choose the right materials, how to read a cross-stitch pattern, and how to stitch the cross-stitches.
Materials
- Aida cloth (14 count or 16 count)
- Embroidery floss in your desired colors
- Embroidery needle
- Scissors
- Hoop (optional)
Choosing the Right Aida Cloth
Aida cloth is the fabric that you will be stitching on. It is available in a variety of counts, which refers to the number of holes per inch. The higher the count, the smaller the holes will be. For beginners, it is recommended to use 14 count or 16 count Aida cloth.
Choosing the Right Embroidery Floss
Embroidery floss is the thread that you will be using to stitch the cross-stitches. It is available in a wide variety of colors, so you can choose the colors that you like best. For this tutorial, we will be using DMC embroidery floss.
Reading a Cross-Stitch Pattern
A cross-stitch pattern is a chart that shows you where to stitch the cross-stitches. The chart is divided into squares, each of which represents a single stitch. The symbols in the chart represent the different colors of floss that you will need to use.
To read a cross-stitch pattern, start by finding the center of the pattern. Then, follow the lines of the chart, stitching one square at a time. When you come to a symbol, stitch the corresponding color of floss over the square.
Stitching the Cross-Stitches
To stitch a cross-stitch, start by bringing the needle up from the back of the fabric, through the bottom left corner of the square. Then, bring the needle back down through the top right corner of the square. This will create a half-stitch.
To complete the cross-stitch, bring the needle back up from the back of the fabric, through the bottom right corner of the square. Then, bring the needle back down through the top left corner of the square. This will create a full cross-stitch.
Finishing the Cross-Stitch
Once you have stitched all of the cross-stitches, you will need to finish the cross-stitch. To do this, cut the excess floss from the back of the fabric. Then, fold the edges of the fabric under and sew them down to create a border.
